Effects Of A Missing Family Member
(Survey: James Lampinen)

My name is James Lampinen, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arkansas. My research addresses questions at the intersection of psychology and the legal system.

Much of my recent research has focused on the problem of missing persons.
We are currently working with Let's Bring Them Home on a project examining the psychological impact of missing persons on families.

We hope that this study can help us develop better ways of helping families to cope with the trauma of having a family member go missing.

We are seeking your help in recruiting families to participate in the study.
The survey is approximately six pages long and can be completed in about 30-45 minutes.

The survey has been fully approved by the human subjects review committee of the University of Arkansas. Participants' responses will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Only the researchers will have access to the individual responses of participants. In order to examine the long terms effects of having a family member go missing, participants will be invited to complete follow up surveys.

If you know of family members who are interested in participating in the survey, please have them contact the researchers at lampinen@uark.edu.

After contacting us, participants will be provided with a web address where they can complete the survey at their convenience.

Information about Dr Lampinen:

Dr. Lampinen is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Lampinen received his bachelors degree in psychology in 1991 from Elmhurst College and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology in 1996 from Northwestern University.

He spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the State University of New York at Binghamton before joining the faculty at the University of Arkansas.

Dr. Lampinen has authored over 40 articles/book chapters. He is currently under contract with psychology press for a book entitled The Psychology of Eyewitness Identification and another book entitled Protecting Children from Violence.

Are Dream Drawings Real? ~BriansDreams~

Alright, I have to admit that I'm more of a skeptical kind of person...
I've come across BriansDreams a few times of late, while researching a missing child/persons case.
To be honest, I'd kind of skim the page, shake my head, and move on. After all, I'm looking for facts, not some dreamer who brings an already devastated family false hopes!

And yet...
I believe that all of us who has ever known the heartache of searching for a missing loved one, finds ourselves at the inevitable crossroad of 'Loose Hope Avenue' and 'Continue to Believe Lane.'

Is the practice of Dream Drawings real? I don't honestly know...
But I have to admit, whether it's real or not, it appears that Brian does have a passion to help with our missing!

Live TV : Ustream

After watching this video, I revisited BriansDreams, and actually did a bit of reading this time...with the intention of at least keeping an open mind.

My name is Brian Ladd and there's really not much to what I can do...basically I have dreams, write them down and post them on this site.

One thing I want to make clear before we go one...I do not consider myself a psychic, I'm not able to get visions or talk to dead people. All my work is done in dreams and I firmly believe we can all do this, it just takes time and practice, and I'm here to help anyone that's willing to listen and has an open mind.

I post all my work...no matter if its correct or not. I might lose readers this way, but I believe that removing any of my work would hurt my credibility. Now most people already think I'm a crazy nutcase, but at least I'm a credible nutcase. I have also had visions in the past that many said were totally wrong...yet a year later...my viewings turned out to be validated. As far as I know, I'm the only person in the world doing this, and I challenge others to do this same, especially those who really do have psychic abilities.

CAUTION!!!

I do not advise family of the missing to take every psychic phone call at face value, because there ARE scammers out there who does NOT care who they hurt, as long as they are tapping YOUR bank account! So, PLEASE use CAUTION, if you do have an open to the use of a psychic!

Forever Searching

ForeverSearching Operational Update

October saw us sending out around 11,000 emails, which is slightly down, owing to members being away on vacation or having family issues to contend with. We have just bought into an emailing program which means we can send out individual emails (not spam) at a greater rate of knots, so we would expect to see this figure of emails going out, at least double, this month.

If you've never heard of Forever Searching, I don't know what to say...
Their update and entire website is packed with helpful information, resources, and featured children. If you are interested in helping with our missing, PLEASE take the time to browse through this site!

What Is CODIS?

AFIS
NCIC
CODIS
BOLO
DNA

HUH??? Say WHAT?

All Law Officials Should Know AFIS, NCIC, CODIS, BOLO, and DNA.

~Educate Yourself Here~

What IS CODIS?

CODIS is a computer software program that Operates on Local, State, and National Databases of DNA profiles from convicted offenders, unsolved crime scene evidence, and missing persons.

How Does CODIS Work?

CODIS uses 2 indexes to generate leads in crimes

1)The Convicted Offender Index contains DNA profiles of individuals convicted of certian crimes.

2)The Forensic Index contains DNA evidence obtained from crime scene evidence.

Please go to Local FBI Listings for more information on requesting packets.

(The packets must be requested from an approved CODIS lab or department) The packets will be mailed to law officers closest to the family who is reporting a missing loved one.

Law officials will be given a date of entry from CODIS. Once the missing person's DNA is in CODIS it will be compared with all current entries. CODIS will also later compare any human remains found in the future.

All missing persons should be submitted into CODIS.
A standard list of data entry for cases of the missing is as follows:

♦ AFIS
♦ NCIC
♦ CODIS
♦ Dental Records
♦ Good Current Photo
♦ Send county/state BOLO out concerning missing person
♦ Contact your state clearinghouse and report missing person

Listing of State Clearinghouses

(includes adress/phone number/mail/email for each state)

This is a free service to law officials across the country and assures good information to be obtained nationwide in the identification process of unidentified and or missing persons. The following links will help you in your search for good information.

AFIS Automated Fingerprint Identification System
NCIC National Crime Information Center
CODIS Combined DNA Index System

Milk Cartons For The Missing Are Back!

August 29th, 2008
MISSING: Jessica Edith Louise Foster

After seeing this Milk Carton on a Myspace bulletin, I just had to know more! I proceeded to My Milk Carton to scope out the site. My first observation is that this site is quite new, so I did what any nosey blogger would do... I dropped admin an email. With Milkman's permission, here is a bit of our conversation.

[Mammabear]:I've been following/posting the story of Jessie Foster for quite sometime now.
Now this Milk Carton??? What a FANTASTIC idea!
Could you explain more of yourself and this project, please? I'd love to post info for this, and think I know of many who would be interested. (but no offense, since this appears to be new, I'd like some reassurance that this isn't somehow a scam.

[Milkman]:I don't have any missing persons in my life exactly, however, I have used the Internet to search for someone and know how difficult it can be. This site was actually started as part of a class I was taking, and then the idea bloomed.
At first I wanted to make a site where people could re-connect with someone from their past. But the more I looked around on the Internet, I realized that I could do something much more worthwhile and help people find their missing loved ones. Reading the stories of other people searches has driven me to create this milk carton site.

[Mammabear]:
I like the idea that this milk carton would pop up randomly. Is that really an option? Would certian areas be targeted? Like a tri-state area of where the person went missing, or something like that? Or is it pop up by the sites who host Milk Carton? If so, do you have any particular sites in mind?

[Milkman]:
I assure you this is not a scam in any way. Basically the idea is that the site is supposed to be a free place where anyone can post a milk carton for their missing person.
As far as the milk carton ads, my current plan is to simply run them as Google ads.
Just have a picture on a milk carton and have it show up on pages that contain advertisements. This is what I meant by 'pop-up' on various pages all over the Internet. Maybe one day I can make them be actual "pop-ups" but I'm not there yet. They would simply be regular internet ads.
I wasn't planning on targeting specific demographics or sites, because I think it would be better to show them to the 'general public'. It may be possible to target specific states near the disappearance, I'm not sure yet.

My Milk Carton

Posting a milk carton is FREE and it is an easy way to help you find someone.

Upgrade Milk Carton
If you want to take your search to the next level, you can upgrade your milk carton. This will put your milk carton on advertisements all over the Internet. TO CELEBRATE THE OPENING OF THIS SITE, THE FIRST 5 MILK CARTONS WILL BE UPGRADED FOR FREE!

Peace 4 the Missing

Visit Peace 4 the Missing

I've only been a member of Peace 4 the Missing a few weeks, yet I feel as though I am at home. I don't think I've met a group of people as willing to learn and understand the confusions and pain of the 'left behind' family who is searching for their missing loved one.

Peace 4 the Missing was created by Maggie's Rose, who writes:

Can We Bring Peace?
No, we can't...In my humble opinion and own life experience, only God can do that. And sometimes, even HIS peace is not one we are capable of truly comprehending nor accepting in this life on earth.
So, why are we here then, at Peace 4 the Missing? Why do we and why should we care? Because, even if, God willing, we are "only" somehow able to bring about even one mere drop, the tiniest of sprinkle of a peaceful, even momentarily peaceful feeling to those forced to endure the anguishing pain of the missing, then it is worth it.
Read More...Can We Bring Peace?

In her spare time, (Not that I'd imagine she really has much of that) Maggie's Rose marches to the front line...gearing to save the world one person at a time. Her latest efforts were to bring about an awareness for Lisa Hatchell, whose July 19th birthday ironically coincided with the 5th year of her mysterious disappearance.

Researching on a subject that a lot of the world prefers to close their eyes to, Maggie's Roses' efforts to activate public awareness are commendable. Actively Aware.

A second member of Peace 4 the Missing that deserves a round of applause is Delilah, who says:

Not long ago Maggiesrose and I started talking about building a place where families of missing persons could come and do what they needed to do to make their life a little bit more comforting despite the pain and sorrow they have endured. We talked and talked about what to offer and just how to do it and finally came up with the premise that if we build it, they will come.

Perhaps the mailbox isn't overflowing with requests to join, (yet) but slowly people are finding their way to Peace 4 the Missing. So Delilah, you were right...we will come.

With the blog title Mothers Are Vanishing, need I say more about Delilah's passion?
Along with the efforts of raising awareness for Lisa Hatchell, Delilah has posted on missing mothers such as:
Lucely "Lilly" Aramburo
Alice Donovan
Viridian Maldonado
Unfortunately the list of missing mothers goes on. Luckily, they have warriors such as Delilah on their side!

One by one people who find Peace 4 the Missing are joining in. Some of these members speak of the unthinkable, talking of their angers, frustrations, and emptiness, to what is starting to feel like a 'family'

Project Jason

Project Jason is an non profit organization that has many awareness programs including: adopt a missing person, 18 wheel angels, and has recently launched the Where in Omaha? bus bench program. Providing much needed assistance for families of the missing, Project Jason promises to be an invaluable aid to missing adults as well as missing children.

Before June 13th, 2001, we were just an ordinary family living a peaceful, happy existence. My husband, Jim, and I worked outside the home, spent time with our two wonderful sons, attended Mass every Sunday, and enjoyed the company of family and friends. On that fateful Wednesday, our lives changed forever. Our family unit was brutally ripped apart when our oldest son, Jason, then age 19, disappeared without a trace from our driveway.
More about the history of Project Jason.

June 13, 2008 marks seven years since the mysterious and tragic disappearance of Jason Jolkowski, the namesake of our organization. His 27th birthday is June 24th. In honor of Jason, his birthday and his generous spirit, we are launching a fundraising campaign.

If you have an interest in missing persons, or want to know more about how you can help with Jason's 27th Birthday Campaign please take the time to browse through Project Jason.

~Cold Case Cards~
Poker with a Twist

I've played my fair share of poker back in 'the day.'
Everything from 7's & Jacks to Stud. It's a great way to pass some time. There are so many variations of poker that I didn't think it possible to invent a new game.

Tommy Ray, in Polk County Florida, proved my theory wrong by developing his own deck of cards for a 'newer' game that I'll call "Cold-Case Recognition"

Now, an updated version of Tommy Ray's deck of cards are being distributed throughout prisons in Florida. Each card has a photograph and facts about an unsolved homicide or missing person case.

There are two decks of cards that profile 104 of the coldest murder cases in Florida. There is a third deck in the process of being produced. Besides the photographs and facts on each card, the Crime Stoppers toll free phone number is listed.

The first decks were distributed in the summer of 2006 and produced 66 tips. As a result, two murders were solved and others are in process and no longer considered cold cases. Florida’s success thus far, with the cards, has encouraged numerous cities around the country – San Diego, CA; Kansas City, MO; and Odessa, TX – to create their own decks and distribute to their respective local prisons.

Slowly these Cold Case Decks are finding their way into prisons, across the nation...
Florida, Minnesota, Ohio, Oregon and Wisconsin are a few of the states now using these playing cards.

Glenn Pillman, 41, of Green Bay, Wis., said he hopes the cold-case card featuring his sister Judy Pillman will lead to a clue to help solve her murder.

Judy Pillman, 24, disappeared Oct. 16, 1986, after she had been dropped off for a Denver Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. She never went to the meeting, and her body was discovered by a fisherman 10 days later on the west side of Chatfield State Park. She had been shot to death.

"I think whoever came up with the idea of the cold-case cards was brilliant," Glenn Pillman said. "Whatever exposure we can get out there will help. Maybe it will trigger something."

Pillman was a teenager when his sister was murdered.

"I remember her as a kind, sweet-hearted person," he said. "She was my sister. I feel like it's my responsibility to bring justice."
Colorado inmates dealt cold-case cards to solve crimes

Let's hope that these cards actually help solve some of these cold cases...
There are too many victims and left-behind families, that deserve answers & justice.
