Haley Barbour on Wednesday suspended the double life sentences of sisters Jamie and Gladys Scott, who were convicted in 1994 in connection with a robbery.â•˛To date, the sisters have served 16 years of their sentences and are eligible for parole in 2014. Jamie Scott requires regular dialysis, and her sister has offered to donate one of her kidneys to her," Barbour said in a statement. "The Mississippi Department of Corrections believes the sisters no longer pose a threat to society. GOV. BARBOUR'S STATEMENT REGARDING RELEASE OF SCOTT SISTERS
"Today, I have issued two orders indefinitely suspending the sentences of Jamie and Gladys Scott. In 1994, a Scott County jury convicted the sisters of armed robbery and imposed two life sentences for the crime. Their convictions and their sentences were affirmed by the Mississippi Court of Appeals in 1996.

Sister's Kidney Donation Condition Of Miss. Parole

Unique Parole Condition: Miss. Inmate Must Give Kidney To Sister To Have Life Sentence Lifted
(AP) JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour has suspended the life sentences of two sisters convicted in 1994 for their roles in an armed robbery, but one sister's release is contingent on her giving a kidney to the other.

Gladys and Jamie Scott were convicted of leading two men into an ambush in central Mississippi in 1993. The men were robbed of $11 by three teenagers who hit both men in the head with a shotgun and took their wallets, court records said.

The Scott sisters are eligible for parole in 2014, but 38-year-old Jamie Scott "requires regular dialysis, and her sister has offered to donate one of her kidneys to her," Barbour said.

Barbour said in a news release that 36-year-old Gladys Scott's release is conditioned on her donating one of her kidneys to her sister.

Dan Turner, Barbour's spokesman, told The Associated Press that Jamie Scott was released because she needs the transplant. He said Gladys Scott will be released if she agrees to donate her kidney because of the significant risk and recovery time.

"She wanted to do it," Turner said. "That wasn't something we introduced."

Barbour is a Republican in his second term who has been mentioned as a possible presidential contender in 2012. He said the Mississippi Parole Board reviewed the case at his request and agreed with the indefinite suspension of their sentences, which is different from a pardon or commutation because it comes with conditions.

An "indefinite suspension of sentence" can be reversed if the conditions are not followed, but those requirements are usually things like meeting with a parole officer.

The Scott sisters have received significant public support from advocacy groups, including the NAACP, which called for their release. Hundreds of people marched through downtown Jackson from the state capital to the governor's mansion in September, chanting in unison that the women should be freed.

Still, their release won't be immediate.

Mississippi Department of Corrections Commissioner Chris Epps said late Wednesday that he had not received the order. He also said the women want to live with relatives in Florida, which requires approval from officials in that state.

In general, that process takes 45 days.

I originally started ~LostFaces~ of the missing, as a means of aiding in the distribution of information, concerning missing children and persons. Yet I find that my perception of who a ~LostFace~ is, continually changes with time.
I have come to realize that some ~LostFaces~ are not even missing at all.

In October of 1994, Jamie and Gladys Scott were sentenced to double life terms in prison. That's double sentences each! Neither sister had prior convictions or arrests. Three young men confessed to the robbery and implicated Jamie and Gladys in the crime.
On December 24, 1993 Scott County Sheriff's Department arrested the sisters for armed robbery. The three young men were all related and referred to as the "Patrick Men". Coercions, threats and promises led these men to turn state's evidence on the Scott Sisters. The Patrick men received lenient sentences in exchange for their testimonies.
During a confusing and obviously fabricated statement on the witness stand, testimony was brought out regarding the coerced statement, the jury still found Jamie and Gladys Scott Guilty.
During the trial the Patrick man admitted that he did not write the confession, the police did. He was threatened and told, "He would be sent to Parchman and made out of a woman". (He was 14 years old during this testimony).
In 1998, one of the Patrick Men wrote a sworn affidavit telling the truth - that Jamie and Gladys were not involved. The court never heard the affidavit!

Shared Parenting CAN Work...It CAN be done!

It's 6:30 on a Friday morning. Missy arrives at her childcare providers home, ready for a new school year. Graduating from grade K to 1st grade brings a whole new schedule for her parents to work out - at home, with the childcare provider, and with the school.

What makes Missy and her schedule different than a lot of other children going back to school this year?
Her parents have a 50/50 shared custody plan.

How do I fit into this?
I'm the childcare provider, and for the past year I have watched Missy's parents work through various scheduling situations, in order to have a workable, shared parenting relationship.

Needless to say, I have changed the names of this family, and I have asked both parents permission to post this.

Missy's mom asked why I wanted to write about them.
All I can say is that Missy's parents do such a tremendous job with shared parenting that they deserve a major shout-out. While handling their own situation, John and Jane S. have been unknowingly setting example of what can be accomplished, when 2 separated/divorced parents work together, for the best interest of their child.

Jane answered my ad for childcare about a year ago, and even though they are divorced, BOTH parents brought Missy to meet with me. It seems they prefer to hire the same childcare provider, instead of Missy having to switch providers every week.
Yes! BOTH Parents worked TOGETHER to find childcare.

SHARED PARENTING CAN WORK...IT CAN BE DONE!

At first I was nervous with this shared custody arrangement. I was concerned that I would say something to one parent that would 'upset the cart,' so to say.
But over the course of the year, both parents have impressed me many times over, and I am no longer worried about either of the parents getting jealous about something, starting a fight, or having the police to my house.

I have observed John and/or Jane holding their tongue, instead of making bad comments about the other.

Both John and Jane S. have been flexible enough to smoothly handle Dr. and Dentist appointments.

Missy came home from school one afternoon with a small problem. Even though it was not life threatening, I asked her if she wanted to use the phone and talk with her Mom... Dad didn't freak out because I allowed Missy to call her mom, when it was his week.
I guess he just trusted my judgment on which parent I felt should handle the phone call.
What a smart Dad! Instead of insisting that all phone calls be made to him on his week, he traded off that one phone call - for a lifetime of trust!

AND...

Even though it was Mom's week to have Missy, it was Dad's scheduled vacation time, so she allowed Dad to take Missy on summer vacation.
Jane had every right to refuse this request...after all, it was her week!
But she didn't.
What a smart mom! She gave up one of her weeks - for a lifetime of respect!

SHARED PARENTING CAN WORK...IT CAN BE DONE!

John and Jane S. don't deserve to be considered a 50/50 parenting arrangement, because from what I've witnessed, BOTH Parents are giving even more than 100%

I frequent various sites and forums that deal with children being used as a pawn, in the 'game of divorce,' and I've seen some rather depressing statistics of parents who alienate their children from the other partner.

I am hoping that this post will give a bit of encouragement to those parents who are searching for ways of better handling their shared custody arrangement.

Many 'seemingly harmless' social networking sites have become nothing more than a hunting ground for predators who are on the prowl!
We surely can't lock our children away to keep them safe, and let's face it-
the internet is NOT going to go away!
Therefore, as parents all we can really do is teach our children good safety rules, remain involved, and be vigilant.

Once my son graduated from Elmo's world, Thomas the Train, and Nick Jr, I quickly realized that I'd best be on my toes!
As soon as he'd show me a site that I thought was ok, he'd turn around and prove me wrong by clicking on an external link at the bottom of the page.
I was horrified to learn that with a few clicks, my son could go from 'fun math facts' to 'kill 'em all DEAD DEAD DEAD!'
YIKES!

I was leary when he told me about a new site called 'Secret Builders'
Especially when he mentioned that it's a chat site.
My first thought was,
'And it's a secret Why???'
PLUS
I'm not ready for my son to be in chat~
even though he is!
BUT, I have an open mind, and I promised that I'd check out Secret Builders with him. I'm glad I did!

Several Riders with courage and commitment to the cause of equality in the family court system of Pennsylvania will be riding their bicycles from Philadelphia, PA to Washington, D.C. in protest to the numerous injustices perpetrated against Fathers and their children in the Family Court System.

Along their route they will be stopping in Harrisburg, PA on July 21st to Lobby the support of several pieces of introduced Legislation to correct these inequalities and to protect a Fathers relationship with his children after separation or divorce.

Upon their arrival in Washington, they will make an address to the thousands of attendees from states across the nation at the
4th Annual Family Preservation Festival in Washington, D.C.

The proposed pieces of Legislation are:

PA House Bill 463
Which provides for Presumptive Equal Custody of children provided that in those cases children would not be put at risk.

"The state's current 'best interest of the child' standard is too often based on outdated, inaccurate or stereotypical views of parenting in our society and the relationship that each parent has with a child," Belfanti said. "Under my legislation, the goal in every child custody case would still be finding an arrangement that represents the best interest of the child, but we would start from a presumption that joint custody represents that best interest and work from there, not the other way around."

Belfanti stressed that the legislation does not mandate joint custody or any other type of custody arrangement, nor any specific division of physical custody. Courts would still have wide discretion in deciding final custody arrangements.

"This joint custody presumption is a guide, a starting point, but not a straitjacket," he said. "It does not require shared parenting, nor does it reduce or eliminate protections against unfit or violent parents. It simply instructs the courts, when possible and appropriate, to maximize exposure of the child to each parent and to recognize that fit parents who have a desire and ability to share responsibility for custody and care of their child after a separation or divorce have the right to do so." More than 30 other states already have some form of a joint custody rebuttal provision in place, he said.

"The impact that a single-parent household has on a child can be startling," he said. "For instance, about 63 percent of teen suicides, 90 percent of homeless or runaway children, 71 percent of high school dropouts and 85 percent of youth in prison come from fatherless homes," Belfanti said. "Both mothers and fathers are an important part of a child's life. In cases where both are willing – and able – to provide custody and care for a child after a separation or divorce, that is the position from which the courts should start, as well."

Recognize insecurity & put it in it's place!

We made initial contact by E-mail, through a 3rd party. At first I was skeptical of who it was I was talking with. We e-mailed personal questions&answers back and forth
until the both of us were satisfied that it was indeed mom and son talking.
That's when insecurity stepped in!

What if he doesn't really want to reunite, but instead just wants the chance to tell me how much he hates me?
What if he tells me that he never wants to see me again?
Will he be embarrassed of the mom he barely remembers, once we go to video cam?
What if he doesn't believe anything I say to him?

Those were just a few of the questions nagging at me, when we first began our reunification process.

In spite of my worries, our conversations went well.
"Skype!" He suggested.
"HUH?"
He patiently explained how to download the Skype program.
After ten years of searching, there my older son was, sitting right before my eyes!
I didn't have a cam set up at first, so he could not see the tears as I traced my fingers across the computer screen.

For about a week we met up on Skype just about every night.
We asked each other questions. I heard "Do you remember?" about a million times.
We played songs for each other. We sent funny video links back and forth. I 'introduced' him to his little brother. We took many pictures of each other on Skype...
All of these activities helped fill in gaps, when we were lost at what to say next.
Then as easily as he reappeared in my life, he was gone!

Did I say something wrong? I was honest with his questions.
(Even the uncomfortable ones) Should I have lied to him instead?
Maybe he really did hate me, and just wanted to ......

The list of 'what if's' goes on and on. All of these questions were filled
with self doubt.
I am sure that I was miserable to be around at this point.

I sent him an Email, but there was no answer. Perhaps I am being too pushy, and he feels like I'm bugging him too much?
That's it! If he don't want to talk anymore, I get it...

About 2 weeks later, he contacted me. I was afraid of being rejected again, so I tried to remain aloof. That didn't work well for me and instead, my heart bubbled over with joy.
It turns out that I had neither said nor done anything wrong.
The lack of contact was simply because he's a teen boy, with things to do. Go figure!
About that unanswered E-mail?
"I HATE to write, mom! I don't write Email or letters. I did read your letter though."

I went through this 'insecure phase' the first few months of initial contact. Every time I didn't hear from him, I blamed myself, and constantly questioned what it was that I had done wrong.
Yet each time it was the same answer....
A young adult with things to do!
Whew!

It took quite a few months, and a bit of pressure from my sis for me to take the next BIG step.

It's not that I didn't want to see my own son...
After all, I'd been searching for him and his brother for over 10 years.
But I was insecure and frightened to death.
Afraid of what?
Everything! I was afraid of saying the wrong thing. I was afraid of doing the wrong thing. You name it, and I was just downright scared of messing it up!

FINALLY I asked. "Would it be o.k. if I came down, and we went out for a pizza or something?" Instead of a slice of pizza and not enough time, the people with whom he lived invited me to their home for the weekend. How kind of them!

It was a long enough drive to where he lives. Long enough for me to worry myself ill!
What if they were luring me there, only to gang up and beat the crap out of me?
What if it were a hoax, and I made the drive, only to find that it was a wrong address?

Do you see an unhealthy pattern developing?
For every step forward with our reunification, I worried myself 3 steps back.
BAD MAMMABEAR!!!
Again all of this worry was unnecessary.

After 10 + years of searching, I FINALLY MET MY SON!
I can never repay these 'strangers' who opened up their home as a 'neutral-comfort zone,' so that my son and I could reunite.
Words can't possibly describe that weekend. We had a great time!
(Although I am suspicious that he was trying to do me in, with that 12 mile hike in the wee AM hours!)
The weekend came to an end waaayyy too soon. It was impossible to even begin to make up for the 10 years gone by.
I grew bold and asked him if he wanted to come visit for a week, and was more than elated when he agreed.
Within the week he met his little brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other relatives. There were a few informal dinner parties. The two of us stayed up late, trying to catch up with lost time.
Many many times he compared himself and his mannerisms to mine. He saw! What an awesome compliment!

Alas, it was time to take him back home. I have to admit that It wasn't easy to do that!
There was still so much left unsaid.
And yet he said it all...
With a hug he asked, "When are you coming back, mom?"

I was thinking of the tragedy of this case just recently. Anniversaries are excruciating and it is small comfort to families that others know what they are experiencing right now. My family doesn’t know the words either, that would help assuage ambiguous grief but we understand...

Damien Nettles was last seen in the Cowes area of the Isle of Wight on 2nd November 1996.Damien was 16 years old when he was last seen. He was described as 6'3 tall, slim build with brown hair shaved at the back and brown eyes. He was wearing dark fleece jacket and dark blue jeans and black boots. The above photographs show him aged 16 years old and also age progressed to how he may look in his 20's. Thank you, in advance for reviewing my letter and the information below. As a Representative of our district, I am hoping that you will support H.R. 3695. This is very important to me and as a member of our community I believe this is important to all, and hopefully to you as well.

It is no longer a rare occasion in which one may become a missing statistic, rather it happens more often than we would like. The growing number of citizens with Alzheimer's and other cognitive disabilities also has shown a tremendous increase in missing loved ones, which also includes those with other cognitive disorders such as autism.

Your support, and those of your colleagues, are desperately needed. We feel if we do not gain support the bill will just die off. This bill is very necessary. We only want to have the gaps closed that will enable families of missing to have one source to be able to search for their loved ones.

Some recent published examples are:

* 200 unidentified bodies,in Florida, right now from 60's and 70's lying in wait in county morgues, unidentified. Orlando Sentinel

* In Los Angeles, there are 4815 unclaimed.

Every year tens of thousands of Americans go missing, never to be seen by their loved ones again. Additionally, there are also an estimated 40,000 sets of unidentified human remains that are being held or disposed of across the country. Sadly, because of gaps in the nation’s missing persons systems, missing persons and unidentified remains are rarely matched. The Help Find the Missing Act (Billy’s Law) is an effort to fix these gaps. We want to help families to have the resources so that we can lessen the burden on the system as well as bringing loved ones home for a proper burial.

This legislation is named after Billy Smolinski of Waterbury, Connecticut who went missing on August 24, 2004 at the age of 31. Billy’s family knows all-too-well the systemic challenges in trying to find the missing. They quickly learned that while federal law mandates law enforcement report missing children, there are no such requirements for adults – or unidentified bodies. Compounding this problem is the fact that local law enforcement agencies, medical examiners, and coroners, often don’t have the resources or training to voluntarily report these cases. Finally, even when missing adults and remains are reported, the wide-range of unconnected federal, state, local, and non-profit databases to help match the missing with unidentified bodies, makes finding a match an often insurmountable challenge.

Billy’s Law builds upon recent efforts to address these issues by:

* Authorizing, and therefore helping to ensure funding for, the National Missing Persons and Unidentified Persons System (NamUs), which was created in July 2007 by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide a missing persons/unidentified database that the public could access and contribute;

* Connecting NamUs with the FBI’s National Crime Information Center (NCIC) in order to create more comprehensive missing persons and unidentified remains databases and streamlining the reporting process for local law enforcement;

* Creating an incentive grants program to help states, local law enforcement and medical examiners/coroners report missing persons and unidentified remains to NCIC, NamUs, and the National DNA Index System (NDIS);

* Calling on the DOJ to issue guidelines and best practices on handling missing persons and unidentified remains cases in order to empower law enforcement, medical examiners and coroners to help find the missing.

Even though the stories of how a loved one went missing are different, the emotions of anguish, frustration, and pain are replicated throughout the 'left-behind' community.
Yet instead of allowing this pain and frustration to consume their lives, many people are forming an alliance on sites such as Facebook, Myspace, and Twitter.
People from all walks of life are banding together to form a 'network' & just like the amateur detectives on The Forgotten, many have been bringing their own motivations and skills 'to the table.'

Justice4Billy

Jan Smolinski-Billy's mother, has spent thousands of hours leading an effort to alter the way law enforcement officers respond to the report of a missing adult. She and her husband, Bill, successfully shepherded a bill through the state legislature last year, but at the last second the bill was watered down by the Police Officers Standard and Training Council that made the recommendations voluntary.

The Smolinskis, with help from their state representative in Cheshire, Vicki Nardello, are attempting to make the changes mandatory in this legislative cycle.

In addition, Janice Smolinski has been prodding Senator Joe Lieberman and Congressman Chris Murphy to sponsor a bill in Congress that mandates medical examiners across the country to take samples from unidentified remains and upload the information into NAMUS, a national data bank trying to link 160,000 missing people in the United States to the 60,000 unidentified dead being stored around the country.

Janice Smolinski has become a national spokesperson for NAMUS and was a speaker at conferences in Texas, Colorado and Maryland in 2008 that targeted law enforcement and medical examiners.

September 20th, Sigourney is 18 years of age today – 6.574 days old. Sigourney may not know her real name, her real birthday or the truth about her life, but it’s a fact – today is her birthday. I can remember that day so vividly - September 20, 1991. What a year: The USA unleashes unreasonable force against a former brother-in-arms Saddam Hussein and the people of Iraq. Theodor Seuss Geisel – Dr. Seuss dies. “Dances with Wolves” is the Picture of the Year and The Pittsburgh Penguins defeat the North Stars to win the Stanley Cup.

And Sigourney Teresa Chisholm was born at home with her elated parents, mother – Patricia O’Byrne and yours truly, proud dad, Joe Chisholm in the company of Linda Moscovitch our mid-wife and her assistant (sorry, can’t remember her name) and our dear friend Teresa Whelan – who Sigourney was named after. Oh, and 51 Division of Metro Toronto Police stopped by for a quick peek. Seems we forgot to inform the other tenants of 30 Elm Avenue that Apartment 201 would be giving birth that day and Patricia’s screaming prompted a call to Toronto’s finest.

Patricia and I had our difficulties as a couple leading up to Sigourney’s birth but all our differences where on hold as we were both so hopeful and excited about the impending birth of our child. That day was a day of great hope and joy. Jesse, my son was 2 ½ years old at the time. I didn’t have even one Email to check that day – not many of us knew what that was, but you could send a letter anywhere in Canada for less than $0.30.

There was a transit strike in Toronto at the time and I was at a seminar downtown earlier that afternoon when Patricia’s water broke. My pager went off (yes - we had pagers back then) and I wondered who had that annoying thing turned on and why don't they turn it off? Then I realized it was me and my heart pounded so much it almost leapt from my chest. I knew Sigourney was coming. Patricia was at home and the midwife and Teresa would be there soon. I ran out of the King Edward Hotel and into a cab and blurted out my address. We were in bumper to bumper traffic and the cabbie was quite talkative - about what I have no idea because all I could think about is how I wanted to be home. Having seen a light in front of us turn green, yellow, red three times before we got to the intersection, I tossed the cabbie some money and said, “Don’t worry about it – I will run home,” and in my suit with my brief case, I started striding northbound between lines of nearly parked cars. I got home, huffing and puffing in my sweaty suit and Patricia was quite calm. I got changed, got ready and we timed contractions while waiting for the others to arrive.

Several hours later we celebrated Sigourney’s birth day.

For 5966 of those days, Sigourney has been missing, Patricia has been wanted by the law and I have been searching. Sigourney and I were only in each other’s lives (technically) for just over 600 of the first days of her life. But every day for 6574 days I have woken up each morning a father of two – my beloved Jesse whom I took a generous number of opportunities to say, “Guess What! I love being your dad!” + Sigourney who I have spent at least some of every one of over 5,900 days, searching and working towards a resolution of this conflict. I never feel that I have done enough.

Many of those days have been seemingly overwhelming as the ravages of sadness, sleep disorder, anger or anguish highjack my day, say to me, “turn off the phone, cancel your appointments – today you are my bitch.” Even looking at those words I just typed – ravage, anguish – it seems so melodramatic but if you have witnessed any mother or father in my shoes, or you are one yourself, you know those words don’t even do the levels of despair literary justice. Like living in a hurricane belt, you don’t look forward to it – nor do you resist it, you just bear down and remember you lived through the last one and the one before that.

And when others say to me, “You are so courageous,” I appreciate the kindness of what they say, but it doesn’t seem to be the right word either. I just do what any functionally bonded parent would do. It’s not bravery and it’s not noble and it’s not even integrity, it’s an unyielding compulsion to fulfill a promise you made to your child to prepare and protect them in life. A friend who knew Patricia and knows me said, “Oh my God, this has been your life’s work.” That’s how it turned out, in a way. It’s been like having the duty of a second job (a job you pay to work at) in very many ways. I can count the number of holidays I have found time for on one hand and the holidays that haven’t been Sigourney seeking or devoted to quality time with Jesse on one finger.

Still, I find time for things that I love that don’t take me too far from the phone. I love sports and I love music. Especially, seeing IndieCan through its infancy and helping young, deserving artists – this has been quite healing. It’s like I am helping other people’s children – the songs, in the absence of one of my own children. I am reminded often by well meaning friends that no child wants the pressure of being told “I sacrificed my whole life for you!” no matter what the circumstances. So, when I am not searching, I am making the best of life – some days much better than others.

At the time of writing we are only 1 ½ hours into Sigourney’s birthday and I don’t feel too bad - considering. This is a day of great symbolism for me as Sigourney transitions from child to young adult. I am faced with accepting defeat in my declaration to prepare and protect Sigourney throughout her childhood, come what may. The war Patricia declared on my fatherhood ends in success for her and failure for me. The day was never saved by the forces of good, despite noble efforts. Even in the eleventh hour, no one came to my families rescue. Patricia never saw fit to do what most would agree to be the right thing. As the Toronto International Film Festival leaves town today, there will be no Hollywood ending for the Sigourney story.

You might disagree with my conclusions as you read but check the score-board (Men love sports analogies). What is more pathetic than someone who can’t take a loss? We all know some sorry-ass person like this. Life is full of gambles; some of them just don’t go the way you wish.

Nothing really changes for me today – I am still looking and my arms will always be open wide to invite Sigourney into the life of her patriarchal family that she has been deprived of to date. The slight adjustment in my approach is that I am no longer appealing to her mother, Patricia. Sigourney is an adult and she can make her own choices.

Not that I wouldn’t talk to Patricia right now. Without knowing the present circumstances, it is likely that transitioning Sigourney back to the reality of her life would still be better with Patricia on board. But now it’s not necessary to appeal to Patricia. That’s the only small difference in my on-going search.

Now, about the quote at the top: Pardon the patriarchy of the wording. It was a century ago and I expect Longfellow would be more inclusive in his words today. This was a poet and an educator. A sensitive man who knows much suffering in his life, Longfellow came to the aid of his beloved wife who had accidentally set herself in flames. She would die a few days later from the burns and he would wear a beard the rest of his life to cover the burns he suffered in the rescue attempt.

Again, “If we could read the secret history of our enemies, we should find in each man's life sorrow and suffering enough to disarm all hostility.” Many years before, Confuses said, “To understand completely is to forgive completely.” I have been collecting quotes for a writing project lately and it has been enlightening. Longfellow, especially, because of his suffering in life, his words speak to me.

I have more actual dreams of meeting Patricia than I do of meeting Sigourney. Maybe it’s because I know what Patricia looks like. Maybe the theme of the dream will answer why. Always I am walking with her and I am struggling how to ask the question that will answer “Why did you do it?” And it’s not the excuse I am looking for and not the twisted fantasy of how she has God on her side or how, like the movie, “Minority Report” she imagines that she was saving our daughter from some future evil that I would inflict upon her. I want the truth, the root-cause. I want the damage report so that I can understand and so I can forgive. I loved Patricia. I don’t want to see her as a narcissistic sociopath. She is the woman I procreated with and the blood of my daughter.

Patricia’s brothers are still hostile to this day when my name comes up. Many other family members of Patricia’s are sympathetic to my families cause, but hands-off. So many – and I know some of you twisted fucks are reading this – know in their hearts that that they have conspired with Patricia and some of them feel ambivalent at very least. Patricia did not act alone. She was encouraged. She was enabled. Many more said nothing when speaking up would have been the right thing to do. I want to understand them all and the shit in their life that can allow them to be party to something so grotesque. When I try to think of the depth of damage it takes for each person who has taken her side - how can they be predisposed to the twisted stories that she tells without doubt or sober second thought? I cannot grasp it, but I want to and I have the small comfort from the wisdom of the ages that one day the facts will be known, and from them, healing can begin.

But for now, thanks for reading and for today, if we could all devote some well-wishes to Sigourney on her 18th birthday, I would be grateful.

A Fort Worth teenager returned home Monday night, after the Texas Department of Public Safety officials issued an Amber Alert for her Sunday night.

DPS officials had said 15-year-old Mirella Collazo was abducted from Fort Worth.

DPS officials had said she was taken by another teenager who is a suspect in a shooting. Larry Sigala, 16, is also accused of
shooting Collazo's companion to death in Dallas.

There is no word yet if he has been arrested.

DPS considered him armed and dangerous.

Willows police aid in search for missing girl

Willows police officers joined the search last week after Franco said she was told Celeste was likely hiding with the boy's relatives in Willows. Officer Kelly Meek said police were unable to locate the girl.

Franco said she is concerned her daughter is now being held against her will.

"She hasn't even contacted her friends or anyone," Franco said.

She said the boy has a long, violent history and she is frightened for her child's safety.

She worries her daughter is not safe. She worries her daughter is scared or cold or alone or worse, she said.

"It's hardest for us at night," Franco said. "That's when I feel like I'm ready to just break down."

There are many people and organizations who dedicate themselves to missing children/persons, and that should never be overlooked...
But occasionally I notice someone 'new.' Someone who heard of one case in particular, and just kind of jumped in there.

I don't know how they're getting away with this. The judges are breaking the law. They don't care. I'm a good and loving daddy. I don't deserve this. Madison doesn't deserve this.

I hear the same story from fathers in every state. I've traveled the
country and have seen it myself. I challenge anyone to sit in any
family courtroom, in any city, in any state, for one hour on any day of the
week. They will see that the war on fathers is real.

More than 365 days.

In excess of 31 million seconds.
That’s how long it’s been since Luba Shipman of Liverpool has seen her daughter.
Four-year-old Deonna was taken by her father, Jeffrey Shipman of North Syracuse, for his court-ordered visitation July 11, 2007. Neither has been seen since.
That’s when Luba Shipman became what experts call “the left-behind parent.”
Luba and her ex-husband, Jeffrey, shared joint custody of the little girl since their divorce three years ago. While Luba had physical custody, Jeffrey was allowed visitation. Both parents filed petitions seeking to modify the order in June of 2007 in Onondaga County Family Court.
At the family’s last court appearance, Jeffrey told Luba, “If I can’t have her, no one will.”
“I took it lightly,” she said shortly after her daughter’s disapperance. “I thought he was just angry.”
Deonna went to her father’s for her scheduled court-ordered visitation on Wednesday July 11. She was supposed to return by 5 p.m. Thursday July 12.
Instead, both Deonna and her father vanished.
Jeffrey Shipman’s car was found in the parking lot of the Rochester airport on July 19. Investigators have confirmed that he has taken Deonna and left the country.
“They’ve tracked him to London,” Luba Shipman said. “According to their passport activity [Jeffrey Shipman had insisted on taking his daughter’s passport, as Luba is originally from the Ukraine and he told the judge he feared she would leave the country with Deonna], their last exit was Heathrow Airport.”
Shipman said the FBI told her Jeffrey Shipman had bought two sets of tickets – one round-trip to Frankfurt, Germany and one to London. The tickets to Frankfurt were not used; investigators suspect Jeffrey Shipman bought them to throw them off his trail.
“But they have confirmed that he is definitely in England,” Luba Shipman said.

Deonna is STILL missing, Jeffrey is STILL in hiding, and Luba is STILL going to bed every night, wondering WHERE her beloved daughter is!

I know firsthand what it's like to spend a birthday, holding on tight to that precious picture, wondering what your child looks like as another year passes you by....

I've fallen apart in the department store, as 'I'll be home for Christmas' mocked my most intimate lonliness and pain...
And, I've seen 'that look' from friends/aquaintances, who were uncomfortable with conversation of my missing children.

A majority of the people I tried reaching out to, didn't understand my need to relive memories, in order to keep hope alive. So after awhile, I just quit reaching out.

I still hear the not-so-comforting, shallow advice from people who hadn't a clue.
'You HAVE to move on' and
'At LEAST they're with their dad' or
' Don't worry, they'll find you SOMEDAY'
were all meaningless, overused phrases to me. It shows how little the general public understands about the dynamics of a parental/familial abduction!

St. Louis Jane Doe

I'm not quite sure how I came across this case, and I won't lie...
I honestly wish I still hadn't!
However, now that I do know, I refuse to look the other way. I cannot pretend that I didn't read of a crime so horrific, that I find it nearly impossible to type out the circumstances.
The only picture I could possibly offer for St. Louis Jane Doe, is one of a blood stained sweater. There's no picture of a smiling little girl, braces, cute braids, freckles, or even twinkling eyes.

Most of what is known of Jane Doe came within days of her discovery. She was likely between the ages of eight and eleven. She was big for her age, around four-foot-ten. Without the head, she measured just over four feet. She had been raped and then strangled. Based on the lack of blood at the crime scene, police believe she was dumped in the basement after her beheading. Mold growing from the wound on her neck indicated she was there for several days before the two men found her.

Little else is known about the girl who has become the most notorious cold case in the nearly 200-year history of the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department.

The body went unclaimed on a slab in the city morgue for more than a week before it was given the name Jane Doe. For nine months she lay frozen. Finally, on a glum, rainy day in December 1983, she was buried in a pauper's grave in an historic black graveyard in north St. Louis county. At the funeral were a few homicide detectives, the chief medical examiner, and a half-dozen news reporters. Four muddy gravediggers served as pallbearers.

Her estimated height is 4'10" and her estimated weight is 70 lbs. Her eye and hair color couldn't be determined. She was wearing the sweater pictured at right. The "DOB" and "Age Now" fields are approximations.

Here is an edited copy of something I wrote on a discussion board...

Q: What happens when an abducted child ages up and becomes and adult? Do they return to the other parent? Are they notified that the other parent has been searching for them? Do they even know they have another parent or other family?

Great questions, with a good answer! I cannot speak for all circumstances or for all children...only from my own experience over the last 10 years.

First, I would like to give a major shout out to certain members of
Peace 4 the Missing

(you KNOW who you are!)

Even though I am not comfortable talking about some things at this time...due to circumstances, there are members at Peace 4 the Missing that had been very instrumental in helping with my search! Thank You!!!

Q: Do they return to the other parent?
A: I ASSUMED that all kids these days, including mine, will eventually google their own name (which would lead them to the various sites, posts, and messages I've written them over the years...WRONG!
(Due to current custody laws, my sons were never listed as missing by any organization...they were only missing to me! I call it 'legally kidnapped')

My oldest son

now admits that he hadn't realized that I considered him missing, and that he never considered googling his own name, because he didn't think anything would be there. He was quite surprised when I sent him links of the sites where I had info, and even more surprised at seeing his picture beside the word missing, everywhere.

My younger son

was 'cut off' from the outside world as much as a vengeful, alienating, family member could accomplish. His use of a computer was quite limited, and extremely monitored. He is almost 18 and just now learning about things such as myspace.
So if you are a parent in search, please do not make the mistake that I did. Do not assume your child will google their own name, frequent the popular 'kids sites' and find their own name on the internet.

It has been within the last few months that I have had the chance to 'compare notes' with my sons....
My oldest was 9 the last I had seen him. (Now almost 20)
His memory is quite vivid!
(scary, actually...lol. He accurately describes things that I have almost forgotten...such as where various furniture was located throughout our house, books that I had read to him as a child, and the various junker cars I had owned
)
My younger son was age 7 the last I had seen him. (Now almost 18)
He was told many lies over the years...he was told things such as:
They 'heard' that I was dead, and that I didn't want or love him. Apparently, whenever he recalled a memory that involved his previous life with me, he was told that these were 'made up/false' memories. He was basically brainwashed.
In the words of my older son...'he was not allowed to think'

The reunification process has been an interesting blessing.

I suppose that since my older son and I are alike in many ways, we are slower and more cautious at finding a 'comfortable zone' with each other. Neither of us are a chatter box...which leaves room for silence at times. We are both quite stubborn, and we are both a wise-a$$
Even though he would refer to me as mom, when talking with someone else:
(Such as 'I'm talking to my mom')
It took awhile before he actually called me mom, in direct reference:

(Such as 'hey mom...when will you come visit again?')
I have no problems with his 'reservations' and do not take offense, as I know it's been a long haul for all involved.

This is not so with the younger...within an hour or 2, I heard 'Hey mom!' every few minutes! He had always been the chatterbox of our family. He didn't even hold much reservation in talking problems about *ahem* guy issues...
things that, considering the circumstances, made me blush a bit!

My youngest (3rd) son has learned much about missing children/persons & his young life has been forever touched by my search for the 2 brothers he didn't even know. It was a joyous occasion when he finally got to meet his big brothers!

Both older sons live a few hundred miles away, and even though we seem to be doing well with the 'reunification process,' for now they both prefer to remain in the state that they currently reside in. We do, however, keep in contact via skype/webcam, email, and phone.
None of us are good at mailing snail-mail letters.

Both boys attended a small family reunion recently.
(The reunion went well, btw)
This reunification will be a work in progress for all involved, but all in all, it is going well.

Do they even know they have another parent or other family?

When I asked my oldest son if he REALLY believed that I had abandoned them...and didn't want them anymore, his response was that he did what he had to, to survive. *emotionally/mentally*
In other words, he had to pretend to believe that. Yet deep inside, he knew that something was amiss!

Again, my younger son was the 'target child'
He was led to believe that the abusive family member was the only person who 'cared' for and loved him. As suspected, he was taught to fear me...only the abusive abductor did not count on him standing up to her when he was older... she did not count on me finally getting a message to him. Nor did she count on his teenage curiosity. She did not expect my older son to get in contact, and let the younger one know that I am an ok mom. She did not count on the love we had for each other being stronger than his fear of her abuse. I thank God that this alienator cannot count!

Thank you to all who has taken the time to 'listen' and encourage me, when I was down...
I'm not sure I could have done this for 10 years, without the support I had found in small online communities such as Peace 4 the Missing!

Monday4 the Missing ~Jason Scott Adkins~&~Dr. Jarrett Burton~

Due to the fact that we had so many occurances in April, we decided to combine two missing persons to honor this Monday. Jason Scott Adkins would have celebrated his birthday on April 1 and Dr. Jarrett Burton has been missing since April 4, 2007. We would like to pay tribute to both of these men in hopes that someone, somewhere will see their pictures and information and come forth to their families.

Jason Scott Adkins was fishing on the Ohio River with his brother on Jan. 17, 1999 when the boat he was in had engine failure. Around this same time frame, a barge passing by caused a series of large waves in the river where the men were fishing, and caused the boat to capsize. Only one of the brothers inside the boat with Jason Scott Adkins made it out of the boat and went to call for help.

As search and rescue crews arrived, they reported it appeared as if someone had exited the water in a certain area that was different from where the sole survivor would've left the wreckage. Police asked the family was it a possibility that Jason Scott Adkins could've faked his death because he owed back child support. Both his estranged wife and family do not believe Jason Scott Adkins faked his death that fateful day because he only was $200 behind on child support. There has also never been any trace of Jason Scott Adkins' body if he did indeed perish in the boating accident.

His family is turning to the public for answers in helping solve this mystery surrounding Jason's disappearance.

The City of Inglewood is Offering a $50,000 Reward for information leading to the identification, apprehension, and conviction of the persons responsible for the murder of William Tillett (pictured at right)

On Thursday, May 24, 1990, eleven year old William Tillett was abducted after leaving Bennett-Kew Elementary School located at 11851 S. Yukon Avenue. It was determined that William Tillett walked eastbound on 118th Street, northbound on Simms Avenue, then eastbound on Imperial Highway en route to his home in the area of Hudspeth Street and Spinning.

William was last seen alive at about 3:00 p.m. in the area of what was then Thrifty Drug Store located at Imperial Highway and Crenshaw Boulevard.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. that same evening, William's body was discovered to the rear of 4079 W. 138th Street in the City of Hawthorne. A silver or gray Datsun 280Z was seen fleeing the apartment complex shortly before William's body was found. This vehicle was occupied by two male blacks in their mid-twenties. A red bookbag/backpack was found at the Hawthorne Mall the day following the discovery of William Tillett's body.

The Inglewood Police Department requests the help of anyone with information regarding this tragic murder. Any information provided by any witnesses will be held in strict confidentiality.

March 13, 2008 was the first day of Spring Break for Amber Simmons, but when she awoke that morning things were different.
Her mother, Rachel Conger, wasn't home and as Amber went about her day, her mother never returned.
Family members gathered and went to the police that evening and reported her missing.

Rachel was estranged from her husband, Paul Conger, and by March 16 he would be found dead of a self inflicted gunshot wound.
Sources say that the marriage between Rachel and Paul was stormy and they had planned on a divorce.
According to investigators they think Rachel is the victim of a murder suicide at the hands of her husband, Paul.

According to family members Rachel married young, but always had a great sense of responsibility.
She was young when she became a mother, but took the role quite seriously and raised her daughter, Amber to have that same sense.
Rachel's first marriage broke up, but she was on great terms with her ex husband's family and they all mended their fences years ago.
Rachel stayed close to the family, as did Amber.

Even though this year did not bring the answers Amber is looking for, it's not because she hasn't been in the forefront leading the way for searches to be conducted in several areas of interest.
Amber coordinated car washes, bake sales, and concerts, any way she could she raised money to fund searches.

Last month, CUE Center for Missing Persons united with local law enforcement and search and recovery K9 teams from all over the country to conduct a massive search, trying to bring Rachel home before the one year anniversary of her vanishing. Although weather hampered their efforts, they will be back again to continue searching.

Amber Simmons has had a lot of love and support for her efforts this year, not only from her loving family, but from total strangers who were won over by her maturity and strength to carry on looking for her mother.

“My mom was the most amazing woman ever and the best friend I have ever had and that is what keeps me going everyday. I know that one day eventually she will be found because I will never give up looking for my mother, my best friend. I could tell her everything and she wouldn't judge me- only help me and be understanding.”

"Having the kids gone has turned our family's world upside down, and it is the most horrible thing I have ever gone through, and I don't wish it on any parent," said Espinosa, 38, of St. Paul.

On Feb. 6, Cindy Kaye Adler, 34, picked up 9-year-old Maya Espinosa and 6-year-old Rafael "Rojo" Espinosa as part of her every-other-weekend visitation rights.

They have not been seen or heard from since and are now the subjects of a national and international search involving St. Paul police, the FBI and federal marshals.

"We believe they are no longer in the state," said St. Paul police spokesman Peter Crum.

Authorities so far have learned that Adler, who has relatives in Wisconsin and Winona, Minn., dyed her hair and similarly altered her children's appearance. Among leads is a tip she may have sought refuge somewhere in Missouri.

Adler and Espinosa had a common-law relationship and parted ways after the second child was born. Adler had custody of both children until Espinosa took her to court in 2005 for deprivation of parental rights. READ MORE...

Miami's Oldest Missing Child Cold Case Reopened

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, Fla. --

Miami-Dade police are revisiting one of the oldest cases on county books -- the disappearance of a 14-year-old boy nearly 30 years ago.

Carol Allard, who lives in East Hartford, Conn., still agonizes about her son, who vanished while staying with relatives in South Miami-Dade.

"I'm always looking and wondering. It's been a nightmare," Allard said.

Paul Allard was last seen on Aug. 13, 1976. He had called his mother to tell her he wanted to come home. They made plans for an uncle to pick him up.

On that same day, Allard walked along Bird Road near 112th Avenue, headed for a 7-Eleven store. He never got there.

Allard's relatives from Orlando and South Miami-Dade met with Dinorah Perry, the founder of Missing Children International Ministries, and they persuaded police to reopen the case.

"Somebody somewhere knows something," Perry said. "Back in 1976 there was no DNA, no computer technology. It was not available then."

Del Valle was last seen walking to Blackstone Elementary School on Shamut Avenue in Boston, Massachusetts during the morning hours of December 20, 1976. She was enrolled in a third-grade bilingual class there. The school was located approximately one and a half blocks from Del Valle's family's residence. She never arrived at school that day and has not been heard from again ...

The thing I remember most about being nineteen, was how spontaneous and carefree the world seemed to be, back then. I had an entire life before me, and I was unstoppable!
Suzanne was nineteen when she disappeared...
she had her entire life before her, too!

Suzanne Lyall was last seen on the evening of March 2, 1998, at approximately 9:20 p.m., as she departed her place of employment at the Crossgates Mall in Guilderland, New York. Lyall was known to have boarded a Capital District Transit Authority bus heading to Collins Circle at the State University of New York (SUNY), at Albany, New York, where she was a student. It is believed that she exited the bus at Collins Circle at approximately 9:45 p.m. and has not been seen since that time.

At about 4 p.m. on March 3, 1998, Lyall's ATM card was used at the Stewart's Store located on the corner of Manning Boulevard and Central Avenue, Albany, NY.
At about this same time the individual appearing in the composite picture, left, made a purchase at the counter inside the store.
He is a black male, with a medium/muscular build approximately 30 years old, 6-foot tall,wearing a mid-length "Carhart" type jacket and a dark baseball cap with the "Nike" swoosh symbol on the front.

It is believed that Lyall was wearing the jewelry shown when she disappeared. A polished, 14K, fluted bow ring; a silver ring in the shape of a frog and a necklace with a silver medallion inscribed with a runic character that looks like a block-style letter S. She may also have been wearing a 14K gold flower design cocktail ring.

I was a student at the University at Albany when Suzanne Lyall went missing in
March of 1998.
Living in a downtown dormitory, I still recall the night when the fliers
stating she was missing went up on the walls in the hallways.
Looking at them, my friends and I shrugged the whole situation off as just
being another kid leaving town for the weekend and not letting their parents
know their plans.

Ten years later, we still don’t know what happened to Suzanne. Her parents,
Douglas and Mary, are struggling with not knowing and they may be for
the rest of their lives.

COLE COUNTY -
After someone's been missing for a month, authorities often suspect "foul play" and that's what happened in the Cole County disappearance of Jasmine Haslag.

Wednesday afternoon, the Cole County Sheriff said he thinks criminal activity or other players may be involved in Haslag's disappearance.

Her car was found abandoned in Callaway County.

Thirty-one-year old Haslag was living in Russellville, about 14 miles southeast of Jefferson City, when she went missing.

Neighbors in the town say she'd only been living there for three months. The Cole County Sheriff's department is following leads but says it has no evidence within its county to work with.

"We're doing everything that we can think of within our power to locate her. We've certainly followed up on voluminous numbers of leads," said Cole County Sheriff Greg White. "But after this length of time, with no one having any tangible contact with her, we certainly have to look at the possibility that criminal activity could be involved." READ MORE...

My adult daughter, Jasmine Haslag, went missing in June 2007.

Since that time I have spent every waking moment searching for her. I've spent every waking moment wondering what happened to my first-born daughter. I do not believe she ran away.

I believe there are people out there who have the answers and I will not stop until I know them and my daughter is found.

Having a missing loved one is a loss that dominates your life and it is a loss that no human being should ever have to deal with. When Jasmine first disappeared, I searched for help and was unable to find an organization, like Missouri Missing, to help me.

That is one of the main reasons I have worked so hard to make Missouri Missing grow and become one of the best organizations out there for missing persons.

As a co-founder, I hope to accomplish many things including educating the public on this ambiguous loss.

CALLAWAY COUNTY --

UPDATE: The FBI has confirmed fingerprints taken from the female body found Sunday afternoon near Mokane are not those of Jasmine Haslag.

Callaway County Sheriff Dennis Crane says the Missouri Highway Patrol could not find a match to the prints in state databases; and FBI officials did not get a hit on the prints when they searched the National Missing Person database.

Callaway County officials say an anthropologist will now investigate the remains to learn more about the victim, trying to determine an approximate time and date of death.

My name is James Lampinen, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arkansas. My research addresses questions at the intersection of psychology and the legal system.

Much of my recent research has focused on the problem of missing persons.
We are currently working with Let's Bring Them Home on a project examining the psychological impact of missing persons on families.

We hope that this study can help us develop better ways of helping families to cope with the trauma of having a family member go missing.

We are seeking your help in recruiting families to participate in the study.
The survey is approximately six pages long and can be completed in about 30-45 minutes.

The survey has been fully approved by the human subjects review committee of the University of Arkansas. Participants' responses will be treated in the strictest confidence.

Only the researchers will have access to the individual responses of participants. In order to examine the long terms effects of having a family member go missing, participants will be invited to complete follow up surveys.

If you know of family members who are interested in participating in the survey, please have them contact the researchers at lampinen@uark.edu.

After contacting us, participants will be provided with a web address where they can complete the survey at their convenience.

Information about Dr Lampinen:

Dr. Lampinen is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Arkansas. Dr. Lampinen received his bachelors degree in psychology in 1991 from Elmhurst College and a Ph.D. in cognitive psychology in 1996 from Northwestern University.

He spent two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the State University of New York at Binghamton before joining the faculty at the University of Arkansas.

Officially, Kara is a "missing person endangered."
"It means that there's some concern about her being missing, that we're concerned about her well-being," says Capt. Don Spears of the Belton Police Department. "Specifically, because we've not heard from her, nor have any of her friends or family heard from her."
The concern grew from what police saw in Kara's room, things a runaway might have taken with her. Makeup. Clothes. A carton of Marlboro Lights full except for one pack. She left behind the iPod she got for Christmas and the hair straightener she used every morning.
She planned to interview at QuikTrip the day after she disappeared and had made plans with friends for the next two weekends. Money in her bank account is untouched. She left her debit card in her school locker. But Kara's cell phone, a Motorola Razr she got for her birthday, is missing. It hasn't been used since the morning of May 4. "With a kid that age," Spears said, "that's a concern that the phone's not been on."
Friends doubt that Kara ran away, but police have not ruled out the possibility. Spears says there are no suspects in Kara's disappearance; there's no evidence a crime has been committed. Because she's 17, legal age in Missouri, the police couldn't make her come home even if they found her, Spears says. If Kara wanted to vanish without a trace, he says, she could have found a Web site to tell her how. She could have bought a pay-as-you-go cell phone that can't be tracked. She could have left behind her clothes and that fresh carton of cigarettes on purpose. "It complicates the matter and adds to the frustration," Spears says. "Hopefully we can keep her face out in front of the public."

And yet, her dad worries about the attention. "You kind of go back and forth," Mike Kopetsky says. "If she is trying to come back home, are we putting so much attention on this that she's scared to? All these different possibilities go through your head, and you don't know the right answer. We're all just frustrated … that nobody has said anything yet. Somebody at some point has to say something. What could she be so angry about in her life to where she would have no contact with any family or friends?"

Alright, I have to admit that I'm more of a skeptical kind of person...
I've come across BriansDreams a few times of late, while researching a missing child/persons case.
To be honest, I'd kind of skim the page, shake my head, and move on. After all, I'm looking for facts, not some dreamer who brings an already devastated family false hopes!

And yet...
I believe that all of us who has ever known the heartache of searching for a missing loved one, finds ourselves at the inevitable crossroad of 'Loose Hope Avenue' and 'Continue to Believe Lane.'

Cedar City » The body of a Enoch teen who disappeared in 2007 was found Wednesday in a car that apparently rolled down a cliff.

The body is believed to be that of 18-year-old Christopher Robin Coan.

A man was searching for his dog in Right Hand Canyon about 7 miles east of Cedar City when he came upon a wrecked car and informed the authorities. Searchers reached the car early Thursday and found one body in the car, said Enoch Police Chief David Browning. Clothing on the body matched descriptions of what Coan was wearing when he disappeared Sept. 3, 2007, after leaving a Subway sandwich shop in Cedar City, Browning said.

The vehicle identification number on the wrecked maroon and silver Chevrolet Blazer matches Coan's car, Browning said.

The car was about 1,500 feet from the winding mountain road, Browning said.

Browning said Coan's family has been notified. They were shocked but hoped the news would bring closure, Browning said.

Law enforcement and Coan's family have been searching for him since the night he disappeared. Search teams combed Iron County's many canyons and wide back country. Enoch police pursued tips from the pubic -- all of which appear to have been false.

One tip said Coan and his Blazer were at a Park City gas station a few days after his disappearance. An animal control officer in Silver City, N.M., thought she spotted the Blazer there.

I would like to correct that Chris DID NOT have any money with him, that there was a one hundred dollar bill still in his wallet left at home that if he was planning to leave or runaway or whatever that he DID NOT take time get stop by home and pickup this money nor his wallet nor I.D. or clothing nor his beloved backpack loaded with his favorite books even though, as the article states he had eight hours before anyone would be home and see him. This must be clarified. He disappeared with nothing, nada, zip and this is why I think someone in Cedar City knows what happened to him and is covering it up. Please don't let 13 years go by without coming forward with what information you have as in the case of Kiplyn Davis.

Why aren't parents viewed as 'equal,' unless one parent is proven to be unfit?

On February 4, 2001, Tina was 34, and her daughter, Bethany, was 15, and they vanished...they haven't been seen or heard from in eight years! Since my sister and my niece have been gone, so has a part of me. I haven't ever been the same. My heart is broken and so is my spirit. My mother has gradually crumbled as time has passed without her precious daughter and granddaughter. The anger, hatred, confusion, nightmares have shredded through me and made me into a person I don't even recognize anymore! Our family was divided at first for a long time, as nothing was the same. The holidays, birthdays, family gatherings were like a bad dream because Tina and Bethany weren't there.

We are going to replace the memorial with the old one today which was stolen Fall of 2007 and recovered Spring of 2008, [in back of a storage shed on the Putney road above the Marina] in Brattleboro, VT. It is still unclear who took it and why they dumped it? but we were grateful to have found it.

A new memorial sign to replace the one that was recently stolen is being recreated by McCarthy signs, as we speak, and will be installed in time for my mother to decorate for Christmas.

I have come to realize that some ~LostFaces~ are not even missing at all.

In October of 1994, Jamie and Gladys Scott were sentenced to double life terms in prison. That's double sentences each! Neither sister had prior convictions or arrests. Three young men confessed to the robbery and implicated Jamie and Gladys in the crime.

On December 24, 1993 Scott County Sheriff's Department arrested the sisters for armed robbery. The three young men were all related and referred to as the "Patrick Men". Coercions, threats and promises led these men to turn state's evidence on the Scott Sisters. The Patrick men received lenient sentences in exchange for their testimonies.

During a confusing and obviously fabricated statement on the witness stand, testimony was brought out regarding the coerced statement, the jury still found Jamie and Gladys Scott Guilty.

During the trial the Patrick man admitted that he did not write the confession, the police did. He was threatened and told, "He would be sent to Parchman and made out of a woman". (He was 14 years old during this testimony).

In 1998, one of the Patrick Men wrote a sworn affidavit telling the truth - that Jamie and Gladys were not involved. The court never heard the affidavit!

I want to talk about a woman named Doris Hill. Well, that was her name 50+ years ago, before she was sold through an illegal adoption ring!
Birth Records for Doris, as well as her 4 siblings, were unlawfully destroyed, in order to cover the transaction. Ushered out the back room of a state patrol station, Doris was renamed Deborah Letham.

Deborah Latham thumbs through 28 files full of information about her biological family members. Information she began collecting after her mother died.

"After all of the family that you know is gone, you start to think I have no more family, but I do somewhere. And I wonder if they've been looking for me."

And they were. A week before Christmas she got a call about her sister and later connected with her brother Gary. "My original name Doris Hill was the name he was looking for," said Latham.

That was also when she learned about the illegal adoptions. "There was a scam going around looking for children to sell. The judge was involved and a nurse. Deborah's mother was targeted because she was a poor single mother with nine children.

"They took us to the state patrol station to the back room, and the parents were there and they took us right than," said Latham. "Who got what money or who started it I don't know?"

The original birth records of all five children involved were destroyed, and their names changed to hide the illegal exchanges. This is also making it harder for Deborah to find her biological brothers Earl and Elroy.

"We are still trying to find them, but we don't know what names to look for." She now hopes someone watching may be able to help her fill both of their empty folders.

"If Earl or Elroy know who they are, or know what has happened to them, we would love for them to contact us. Just to let us know they are alive. If they want to be involved with our family, we would love to have them in our family. We want to know what happened to them."

And help her put an end to a 54-year separation with the family she never knew she had. Deborah wants anyone who may have information about her biological brothers Earl or Elroy to contact her.

It's been weeks since the last one, so on Sunday, The New York Times Magazine featured yet another cheery, upbeat article on single mothers. As with all its other promotional pieces on single motherhood over the years, the Times followed a specific formula to make this social disaster sound normal, blameless and harmless -- even brave.

These single motherhood advertisements include lots of conclusory statements to the effect that this is simply the way things are -- so get used to it, bourgeois America! "(A)n increasing number of unmarried mothers," the article explained, "look a lot more like Fran McElhill and Nancy Clark -- they are college-educated, and they are in their 30s, 40s and 50s."

Why isn't the number of smokers treated as a fait accompli that the rest of us just have to accept? Smoking causes a lot less damage and the harm befalls the person who chooses to smoke, not innocent children.

The Times' single motherhood endorsements always describe single mothers as the very picture of middle-class normality. READ MORE...

For me, it took over ten years, to finally make contact with one of my 2 sons. I can't even begin to describe how it feels! So, I can just imagine how Mark and Debbie Baskin are taking it all in!

I'd heard of the Baskin Children throughout myspace, NCMEC, and various other sites dedicated to missing children and persons ... now, 20 years later, they've been found!!!
I've come across the great news this morning, and need to share!

Christie and Bobby Baskin were renamed Jennifer and Jonathan Bunting

Parents Mark and Debbie Baskin hope to be reunited soon with their grown children located Monday in California after being abducted 20 years ago.

Sheriff’s Detective Lt. Bill Sharp said Christie and Bobby Baskin were located Monday night in San Jose with their grandfather Marvin Maple after two witnesses saw a story about the family in the “San Diego Tribune.”

One woman who wanted to remain anonymous reported to authorities Maple, who went by the name John Bunting, (right) made statements about being wanted. Another woman identified him through an Internet photograph. Maple reportedly told one of the women he was upset with the media misrepresentation of him.

San Jose, Calif., Police apprehended Maple Monday night. Maple is in custody charged with kidnapping his grandchildren March 1, 1989 when Christie was 8 and Bobby, 7. Grandmother Sandra Maple died about two years ago.

During a telephone interview Tuesday from his Vidalia, Ga., home, Mark Baskin wants his children to know “first, we still love them. We never stopped loving them. We don’t blame them for what happened and we want to have a relationship with them.”

The Baskins don’t know how their children will receive them after an almost 20-year absence.

“We don’t want to appear to be pushy or bombastic,” Baskin said. “We want to lay the fleece out and say this is what we want. The ball is in their court.”

January 29, 1999 is the last time anyone has seen Diane Louise Wolf. That's a few days over 10 years. Her story aired on my local news, as a 10 year anniversary, this past Wednesday.

Ten years! I know what it's like to search for someone you love, for 10 years. I can't help but wonder how the family is doing right now.

Although media attention probably brings a renewed hope to family who still don't have answers, I am sure that after living this nightmare for so long, it also brings a variety of confused, mixed-up, emotions.

Sometimes it seems as if some view a missing person's picture, and only recognize the case as 1 missing person.
The 'ripple effect' of this sudden,'unknown' loss, throughout family and friends, is often times not understood.

Unfortunately, in the case of a long term disappearance, family who have been grieving this unknown, often hears advice such as 'you have to get over this' or 'You need to get on with your life,' by well meaning friends.

No matter how well intended, this advice is not helpful!
HOW can someone FORGET that a person they love just DISAPPEARED???
It matters not whether it's been a year, 5 years, 10, or even 20 years. Family and friends of a missing loved one battle a grieving process similar to the grief that follows a death.
There is, however, one difference. No matter how many years it's been, this grieving process cannot end, until the day there is some type of closure.

Police say Wolf was last seen at Hanover Foods on Route 116, where she clocked out after working the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift. She went to her residence in Conewago Township and placed her lunch box on the kitchen table, then went to her bank on Dart Drive where surveillance cameras and transaction records confirm she deposited $300 at about 7:33 a.m.

Adams County Woman Missing 10 Years

Wolf's loved ones said that she normally searched for the closest possible parking space at any establishment. Her Grand Prix was parked on the outskirts of Weis Market's lot, which was uncharacteristic of her. There has not been any activity on Wolf's credit cards since January 1999. She left all of her clothing behind at her residence, as well as her cellular phone, which she normally carried everywhere. Only Wolf's purse was missing; it has never been recovered. She normally packed many items if she was planning to go on a trip anywhere.

After watching the story about Diane on the news, I googled her name, and came across a message board with a discussion of her disappearance.
Originally, I was just going to leave a message there, instead of writing a post here on ~LostFaces~

I guess "Evening Sun-TOPIX" deems the link of a supportive missing persons site as terroristic or inappropriate or something, as my post was deleted...

But then while this is just a news story for some, to me it is the many family members and friends of a missing loved one, who might be seeking some kind of help somewhere.

Billboards have been known to actually help, even in a 'cold case.'

Olsen's friends had picked him up on Jan. 19 at the Maple Park, IL home he shared with his parents. After a night on the town at Bar One in DeKalb (1000 W. Lincoln Hwy), his friends--a married couple, his mother recalled--left early while Olsen stayed behind. At closing time, he called a friend for a ride home. (He last used his cell phone at 2:24 a.m., police said.) The friend was unable to pick him up. Stebic went missing from her Plainfield home in April 2007; Petersen, of Bolingbrook, has not been seen since October 2007; and Spira was last seen at his workplace in West Chicago in February 2007.

"Our vicinities are so close together, within 45 minutes of each other. It's not a stretch of the imagination that we could find any one of these people in any location," Sue Olsen said.

And though Olsen's faith remains solid, the terror of not knowing what has happened to her son weighs on her.

"There is never really closure. But when something is solved you at least know for certain what happened. For us, we don't know," Olsen said. "Were they brutally tortured? Were they just beat up and left for dead in the freezing weather? Were they shot and taken somewhere? Were their bodies taken to some other state? You don't know, and it drives you crazy thinking about all of the possibilities."

So instead of dwelling, Olsen is determined to move forward, teaming up with other families of the missing to create a search army. In sharing resources and manpower, Olsen said the odds of finding previously missed clues continue to increase.

My life was shattered 24 years ago. My mom,Mary Badaracco, vanished from her home. Yes I did say 24 YEARS! The last person that saw my mom alive, her husband of 14 years, STILL HAS NO COMMENT! This man, our ex stepfather, TOLD US TO "TELL NO-ONE and DO NOT GO TO THE COPS". He told us his lawyer would handle it, however...the only thing his lawyer did was slither into court and enter a motion for divorce on the grounds of desertion, only 9 days after mom supposedly disappeared, without reporting her missing. Meanwhile, he already had his mistress moved into my mom's house.

About 10 days had already passed by the time I was finally told that my mom had supposedly "taken off" on August 20, 1984. I knew right away something was terribly wrong, I knew our mom would have never "taken off", not after all we'd been through together! I was also told her car remained at her home, a smashed windshield was evident, I suppose only to me, that foul play should be suspected as it was in the driveway, damaged.

So I, (as usual) defied his orders and convinced my sister, who was still in a state of shock from being told the previous week by this ex family that our mom was missing, my only sister,who was told to especially not tell me that our mom was gone. Why would she comply? I feel she was scared to death that our worst nightmare
had come true! The day had come that they went too far and really hurt our mom! Once I knew I told my sister that we must run, not walk, to the police!

Throughout our moms 14year marriage to this man, she also raised all 4 of his kids. We were subjected to much domestic abuse from these sickos. By the time mom realized this, she didn't have a clue how to get away from him! Several times after he'd beat our mom severely we'd flee the home and stay with friends only for him to eventually find us and bring us back to that house, usually by threats and force, or as in one instance, having our Grandma by knife point, while my sis and I could only run and hide under the bed and cry.

Back in the 60's and 70's she never reported this to police. Why would she? He is friends with the cops, he still is friends with people in high places, that's why this case is not solved!

One crucial error the state police made is regarding our moms damaged car. The CSP investigator 1st on scene was "D B's" buddy. They believed him when he told them "the bitch took off and stole my money, too". He told one cop that mom broke the windshield of her car that was left at her house, but he was overheard telling another trooper that he did it! Although I kept asking about the car for over 20 years, I was like a frikken broken record. I insisted the police find this car, I knew it was a key piece of evidence! The police told me to find the VIN number and they would run a search, even though I later found out they, of course, had mom's license plate number the entire time. " D B" got rid of her car and was never even questioned about the whereabouts of this car!

We have had our 1st arrest in all these years. A new state trooper has uncovered much information that has been concealed from us. (a relative of "D B" ) It's only a misdemeanor charge. I thought it was a start. This man is accused of interfering with a homicide investigation.

We believe he buried moms car according to what police learned while interviewing this suspect. A huge excavation took place, 3 cars were recovered, unearthed from this mans backyard, but mom's car was not found. The suspect was scheduled to be in court Dec 5th to possibly accept a guilty plea and a $250 fine and
wow- that's it! Why are we sending the message that it's ok to lie to state police investigators, you will basically just walk away!

As mom's belongings were completely removed, not even a link ball remained of her. In her house, the day she "WENT MISSING" in1984, her belongings, as well as her remains, could be in that car! A few weeks back when the prosecutor told me they were just going to plea him out with that fine, I let him know how unhappy I was. I told him "D B" carries that in his left pocket daily, who is that going to hurt?

I then decided I'd go to the court to see this for myself. However, his lawyer felt the need to pull something shady. On the morning of court last month, supposedly the day of this final continuance, after I drove almost an hour, his lawyer called in (after 9:30 am) and said they needed a new date as she has another murder case somewhere else and can not be there to represent him. I was so furious because this attorney had almost 2 months to get her calendar straight! I immediately asked to speak with the judge and my wish was granted, in her open court with the accused to my right!

I suppose I watch too much TV because I thought my request would be a discussion, privately, in chambers! This was one of the hardest things I'd ever done, trying to be mom's voice in a court of law for the very first time in 24 years, I pleaded with the court to impose the maximum sentence!

I keep hoping and praying that one day, someone with ovaries/testicles will truly hear my story, realizing something must be done, stand up beside me and help me fight this evil.

Believe me, if I had ANY money, I would certainly have been paying for justice for my mom. I can only use every fiber of my being to right this wrong. I've tried to make this broken justice system work for my mother, my family! Something is seriously wrong when killers are allowed to get away with murder.

In my case, not only do we know in our hearts who killed our mom, but they hid our moms remains somewhere. What kind of a monster does that! He also made my mother quit claim her home to him for $1 about 6 weeks prior to her disappearance, and he still resides in mom's house with his mistress, now wife. He took the home out of OUR moms name and gave it to his 3rd wife.

I only want this case solved! The tragedy that happened to my family so long ago threw my sister and I into a state of shock we still feel to this day!

We have been left shattered, still trying to put the pieces of ourselves back together. We thought this was supposed to be moms time for working so hard raising 6 kids and putting up with all the abuse all those years! 6 kids were grown and out of the house, this was supposed to be her time to enjoy life! But mom found out about the affair, and we believe she finally wanted out,like this was the last straw.

This family took everything from us, our childhoods, our mother and even now he takes from my life!

He (and those that keep his secret) also killed a part of me that day too. I have never been the same since my world was shattered in August 1984! My mother was the most beautiful spirit, she was always there helping anyone that needed anything! To further my pain and suffering,authorities made so many mistakes. I've pushed and screamed to be my mothers voice all these 24 years and now I'm being told that even this old state police trooper buddy has lawyered up!

We know that there are people within the community, as well as several persons of interest that do have the missing puzzle piece that we need to solve this case.

I struggle every day to get out of bed to fight for what's right ! Until I know exactly what happened to my mom and I know we've done everything possible to locate her remains, I will be tortured by this ongoing tragic event that occurred in 1984. I can only best describe this daymare as...my mom cries out to my spirit for help!

I have been a wife and mom of 4 for 27 years. I am busy, but the disappearance and
unsolved homicide of my mother, well, it is just there with me every single day, I feel the loss of her beautiful presence.

I ask why have I been tortured by this for so long? Because my state has allowed this crime to go unsolved all these years. I continue to fight for my mom and those that I didn't even know, others that are missing. On behalf of my children, my goal is to show my kids, my nephew and my family that justice really does exist,decent people really do care!

Please join me in a prayer that all of our missing loved ones will be returned to us. Pray that our lawmakers will assist us in making tougher laws. If society no longer knows the difference between right and wrong, then it is our obligation to remind them with a few more laws !

Unfortunately, there were no surveillance cameras outside the mall, leaving detectives with no solid proof that Skip had parked his vehicle there. WOODBRIDGE, Va. - Investigators have found the body of a missing 13-year-old developmentally disabled girl's body in Woodbridge Friday afternoon, police said.
It was found near the Old Hickory Golf Club, off Asdee Lane.

Investigators have been searching for the body of 13-year-old Alexis Glover, who disappeared after leaving the Central Library in Manassas on Wednesday.

Alexis was found Friday 7.9 miles from where she disappeared, Prince William County police Maj. Ray Colgan said.

Chief Deane told reporters Friday night that it appears the girl was slain. He said the circumstances surrounding the case point to a homicide, but would not elaborate.

The adoptive mother of Alexis Glover has been arrested and is charged with felony child neglect and filing a false police report.

Earlier Tuesday, Prince William County Police searched the house of Alfreedia Leona Gregg-Glover looking for clues into her adopted daughter's death. At around 10:00pm Tuesday night, Alexis Glover's adoptive mother was arrested. She is currently behing held without bond.

Police believe that Alexis Glover was murdered at an unknown location, and her body was dumped in Woodbridge. As of now, no murder charges have been filed in Glover's death.

I first read about the search for a child missing 10 years ago, on Legally Kidnapped.

No, LE is not reopening an old case because of new tips. This is the FIRST TIME anyone has NOTICED that this boy had been missing....for TEN YEARS!

Adam was born on June 8, 1987. He was adopted by Doug and Valerie Herrman, out of foster care, when he was 2 and 1/2 years old. Adam and his adoptive parents lived at Pine Ridge mobile home park in Towanda, Kansas.
A few weeks ago, an annonymous person called the Childrens Missing and Exploited Unit to report Adam missing.
Even though the Herrmans have since moved, Butler County Police are investigating the site where the mobile home once stood. The police are considering them as 'persons of interest' in the case.

"He was a problem child. He ran away frequently to the point of exasperation," Eisenbise said. "My clients feel very guilty that the last time he left they didn't make an attempt to locate him. Every other time, the police were called or he wandered back. They assumed he found one of his siblings or went back to his biological parents."
"They want to say they are innocent of any wrongdoing other than not reporting the child missing, which is an offense in Kansas as you know," he said. "The issue of a possible homicide is what I am troubled with, because they did not do it."

Sure, they feel guilty for not reporting an eleven year old child as missing...guilty enough to continue claiming Adam as a dependent for tax purposes! A 'run away-problem child' at the young age of 11 screams of trouble in the home!
As of yet, investigators have not confirmed whether or not Adam had a history of running away.
Adam was being homeschooled at the time of his disappearance.

Sheriff Craig Murphy says they are treating the case as a death investigation. But he says there's no evidence to prove he's dead and Adam may be out there somewhere. Murphy says by investigating it as a death, they cover a lot more information. Murphy says they've done computer data searches on Adam and nothing comes up on him after 1999.

Adam would be 21 years old now.

Several eye witness interviews with family members, including Adams adoptive brother, mention Adam being abused. These family members were told that Adam was returned to foster care, so nobody realized he was missing.

The family of a missing Towanda boy continued to collect money from the state for caring for the boy after he disappeared. The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services could not immediately determine how much money in adoption subsidies Valerie and Doug Herrman received after Adam Herrman disappeared in 1999. He was 11 at the time, but he never was reported missing. Authorities only recently began searching for him after receiving a tip. So far no arrests have been made or charges filed. Welfare officials also disclosed yesterday that Adam once was taken away from the Herrmans after a claim of physical abuse was made. He was returned two days later after authorities were unable to substantiate the allegations.

It is amazing how often people who are not personally involved with adoption freely give their opinions on the subject. They may not say it out loud; however, they really do consider themselves “knowledgeable.” They quickly become indignant if you even HINT that maybe there is more to adoption than they know.

Hmmmmmmm

In a way I can’t fault them. After all, I guess I was one of those all-wise-about-adoption people. I knew what adoption was, and how wonderful it is, and would emphatically proclaim it as a win/win situation.

And yes, it is all that.

It IS wonderful and it IS a win/win – IF, and I repeat IF
I said it is wonderful IF you are on the RECEIVING END of adoption.

The New Year's Day death of 22-year-old Oscar Grant has led to angry street protests amid allegations from the family's attorney that some of the officers used racial slurs.

The officer remains free and has not been charged with any wrongdoing. And some experts have questioned whether he fired his gun deliberately or mistakenly believed he was using his stun gun instead.

At a rally Wednesday attended by hundreds of people, Shawanda Thomas held a fluorescent yellow sign that read: "Oscar Grant: Murdered! The Whole Damn System is Guilty."

Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums called for calm. "Even with our anger and our pain, let's still address each other with a degree of civility and calmness and not make this tragedy an excuse to engage in violence," he said. "I don't want anybody hurt. I don't want anybody killed."

Grant's family has filed a $25 million wrongful-death claim against BART, the San Francisco Bay Area's commuter rail system, and relatives want Mehserle to be criminally charged.

"They want justice, but they don't want any more violence," said John Burris, an attorney for Grant's family. "That officer hasn't been prosecuted ... That's why people don't have confidence in the system right now."

The video footage has led to debate over whether the officer knowingly shot Grant, as the victim's family alleges.

Reports of police officers mistaking a handgun for a stun gun are rare, but not unheard of. In 2006, a sheriff's deputy in Washington state accidentally shot and wounded a disturbed man after mistakenly using his .40-caliber gun instead of his stun gun.

Bruce Siddle, a use-of-force expert who viewed the video clips, theorized that Mehserle was working under stress in a hostile situation and did not realize he was firing his pistol.

"I suspect he thought he was reaching for his Taser," said Siddle, founder of PPCT Management Systems, an Illinois company that trains law-enforcement officers in use-of-force. "If he was under stress, he would not be able to distinguish between a Taser and his firearm. You have video footage that seems to suggest that this officer made a tragic mistake."

But George Kirkham, a professor of criminology at the Florida State University who also viewed the footage, said he finds that hard to believe because most Taser stun guns do not look or feel like pistols, and the officer fired in a manner consistent with a handgun, not a Taser.

Catching my attention when I first opened her myspace page, was the profile picture.
Oppressive dark clouds swirl and loom threateningly above a single billboard, that cries out
'MISSING, PLEASE HELP!'
A profile picture isn't something I'd normally mention, but this picture in particular speaks volumes.
Among the clouds that suggest storm, there is one cloud parting way, making room for a tiny sliver of light. A sliver that I believe represents hope, for family members who have been searching for Roxanne Paltauf (myspace).

On July 7, 2006, Roxanne Paltauf, 18, disappeared from the Budget Inn hotel in Austin, Texas. According to Roxanne's mother, Elizabeth Harris, Roxanne had been staying at the hotel with her boyfriend. The couple had checked in together with plans of celebrating their two-year anniversary. Unfortunately, the celebration was to be short lived.

"I spoke with Roxanne the night she disappeared and she said she would be home the following day," Elizabeth said in a recent email. "I did not like her boyfriend, he was no good for her and she knew it. He is 12 years older than her and exceptionally controlling of women."

The following day, Roxanne's boyfriend called her mom and asked her if she had seen Roxanne. He allegedly told Elizabeth that they had an argument the previous night and that Roxanne had walked out of the hotel room and left all of her belongings behind.

"He stated that he went after her and she said leave me alone," Elizabeth said. "He said he walked away and went back to room to cool down before going out to look for her again, but was unable to find her. That was almost 20 months ago. The only thing we have to go on is what he had told us."

Despite their best efforts, the Austin Police Department has been unable to find any clues that might suggest what happened to Roxanne. Nonetheless, her mother refuses to give up and continues to do everything she can to get the word out. Elizabeth was able to get America's Most Wanted to bring national attention to the case last year and she recently convinced Regan Advertising to donate billboard space. As a result, Roxanne's photo and information has been appearing on billboards throughout the Austin area. Roxanne's mother has also been using the Internet to help spread the word, by making sure Roxanne's photo is available on every Web site that is dedicated to the missing.

"She did not leave her family on her own accord," Elizabeth said. "Someone has taken her and as her mother, it is my duty to find the truth. I still investigate every outlet I can and I will not stop until my Roxanne is found."

Amber Alert Issued After Triple Homicide

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -- Deputies said an Amber Alert has been
issued for two children after a triple homicide in Buncombe County on Thursday
afternoon.
The homicide happened at a home on Old Highway 19-23.

Deputies said they are looking for 6-year-old Hayes Heatwole and 10-year-old
Haley Heatwole.
Hayes was described as a white male with longer, shaggy blond hair and
blue eyes. Haley was described as a white female with brown, shoulder-length
hair and hazel eyes.

Deputies said the children are believed to be traveling with Richard Heatwole in
a white Toyota Tundra truck with North Carolina license plate number YNS-8257 or
LTS-3741.

Anyone with information on Hayes, Haley or Richard Heatwole’s locations should
call 911 immediately.

Deputies said Richard Heatwole should be considered armed and dangerous.

The suspect is Richard Doughlas Heatwole a 45 year old white male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, weighing 165 pounds. He has brown hair and hazel eyes.

The suspect vehicle is a White 1986 Toyota Truck Extended Cab with NC tag number YNS-8257. The vehicle possibly has a camper cover that is white in color. The truck may have gold stripes and rusted fender wells.

Officials say a standoff with a man who police suspect of killing his ex-wife and two others in western North Carolina ended when the man killed himself early Friday morning.

Heatwole was involved in a standoff with law enforcement in Alexander County, N.C., north of Charlotte. Investigators on the scene said they could see the two children through a window.

The standoff ended when deputies entered the home and found Richard Heatwole dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

It was the day before he was to return home from a mock United Nations conference he was attending in Chicago with 13 other University of Missouri-Kansas City students. And a sponsor had just promised them a trip to Costa Rica.

"Mom, aren't you excited for me?" Donna Ross' boy asked.
"Who's going to pay for this?" the Belton, Mo., mother of two wondered.
"Oh, Mom! We'll raise the money! Why aren't you happy for me?"
"OK, I'm happy," said Donna Ross, 59, an elementary school secretary. "We'll talk later."

They never got the chance. Early on Nov. 21, 2006, two days before Thanksgiving, Jesse Ross vanished while in Chicago. This past spring, the police formally suspended their search for him.

The 19-year-old sophomore is a well-liked student with friends across the campus and throughout Kansas City. He is looking forward to finishing up his new room in his parents' home, which was built especially for him. Ross is also counting down until his promotion from intern to paid employee at radio station 95.7 "the Vibe," where he is popular as on-air personality Opie.

"There was not any reason whatsoever or indication that he was negative about anything," said Ross' father Don Ross. "We had a room we were finishing for him downstairs. Jesse was a UMKC fan, but he liked KU basketball. So we were going to do his room in KU colors. We got the right paint colors. He was anxious to get back and set up his room. We checked his cell phone messages and he had plans with friends."

Ross has so much going for him. That's why family and friends are puzzled why he still has not made it home. Ross has been missing since early Tuesday, Nov. 21. He was in Chicago with UMKC's Model UN team for the American Model United Nations International Conference.

Jesse's disappearance comes almost a year after a 31-year-old Matthew Soumakis from Massachusetts disappeared from the same area, possibly the same hotel. Soumakis, who was in Chicago on business, had also been staying at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel and Towers. His body was found floating in the Chicago River near Goose Island two weeks later.

The benefit concert featured three different bands: Episode 4, Frat Pack and A Dead Giveaway, a band Jessie used to tour with, helping to organize the shows. A Dead Giveaway worked with Jesse's fraternity, Lambda Chi Alpha, to set up this second musical event at UMKC. Don Ross also thanked the university administration for its help and support.

"I know things look pretty gloomy, but I've played a little conversation in my mind," said Jesse's mother, Donna Ross. "Jesse would never forgive us. 'What do you mean?' he would say. 'How could you give up?' … We just hope and pray. Somebody's got to know something."

Distinguishing Characteristics
medium length, natural (not dyed) brown hair. Brown eyes. Small circular mole above left eye, mole on left cheek. 5 1/2" scar on left leg, just above the heel. No previous fractures. She may have been of Mediterranean heritage.
Estimated time of death: 7 to 24 hours prior to being found.
Cause of death: she was strangled and then shot in the neck.

She had been carrying a full-term, white female fetus. The remains of the fetus were also found at the scene. It is possible that the moles on her face developed at some time during her pregnancy.

A few days ago was the first I'd heard the name, Nikolas Thurnwald. It infuriates me to read about yet another child leagally abducted, only to be sold.
There had to be a reason...I mean, the state wouldn't just allow an agency to take a child for the money, would it?
I started sifting through different articles online here, so I could find the reason that Nikolas deserved to have his parental rights terminated. It didn't take long!

A.E. went into premature labor and had the child early on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2004. Thurnwald learned of the birth an hour after the baby was born. When he tried to visit the mother, she wouldn't see him, court documents said.

Thurnwald contacted a lawyer but was unable to file a paternity petition until Tuesday because the courts were closed Sunday and also Monday for Labor Day.

By Tuesday, the mother had waited the requisite 24 hours and relinquished custody of the child to LDS Family Services for adoption.

At a hearing on the paternity petition, the adoption was placed on hold.
In July 2005, a state district court ruled against Thurnwald because he didn't meet the deadline for filing the paternity petition.

So the truth comes out! How dare this Dad not file a petition during the holidays, when NO STATE AGENCY would be open!

According to the above article, after becoming pregnant, his girlfriend, A.E. moved out of their home.
Yet, throughout her pregnancy, they continued dating each other, and talked numerous times about the birth of their child.
Anticipating the demands of fatherhood, Dad not only went out to buy the standard supplies for his newcoming bundle of joy, but he also attended most doctor appointments with his girlfriend.

This poor Dad didn't even see it coming! He had NO reason to believe that he needed to file a petition. It's not like these 2 separated on hostile terms. They were still dating! A.E. didn't tell Dad she was considering adoption, before he purchased items for their child, and even included him for intimate doctor appointments. Can we spell d-e-c-e-p-t-i-o-n?

After Nikolas Thurnwald's girlfriend became pregnant and moved out of their home, he continued to date her.

Court: Dad's rights pinched by holiday weekend birth (PDF format)

Justice always prevails though, right? The Utah Supreme Court realized that it's just a bit tricky to file paperwork, when the office is closed, so they decided that unwed fathers are entitled to an extension of the deadline for filing a paternity petition, if the baby is born on a weekend or a holiday.

In a 4-1 decision, the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Thurnwald, saying that when a child is born on a weekend or holiday the deadline should be extended to the next business day.

In a dissenting opinion, Associate Chief Justice Michael J. Wilkins said the Legislature had given unmarried fathers a limited but adequate time period to assert their parental rights.

"The period begins at conception and ends at the time the biological mother executes her consent to adoption," he wrote. "Those who elect to father a child without benefit of marriage must take steps to assert their legal relationship with the child, or they risk losing it altogether."

What if it was Dad who wanted nothing to do with this child, and wanted to terminate his responsibility? Would he be excused from paying child support for the next 18 years?
If Dad had won this case, would the mom assume responsibility of child support?
Unfortunately, I'm rather sure I already know the answer to these questions, and the answers disgust me!

Problem solved, right?
The courts realized that this technical glitch didn't make any sense, so they revised it to make things 'fair' and Dad was awarded custody of his son ....

FARMINGTON, Utah (AP) -- The Utah Supreme Court gave a Utah man the right to challenge the adoption of his son, which he argued was done before he could reasonably file for paternity.

But now the adoption agency says the rights of the nearly 3-year-old child would be violated if the boy was removed from the only home he's known.

Nikolas Thurnwald argued that he and the child's mother made plans to keep the child. But under pressure from her family, the woman gave the child up for adoption shortly after birth.

Thurnwald filed for paternity in 2004 on the first business day after the child was born. But that was after the 24-hour deadline set for unwed fathers because of a weekend and the Labor Day holiday.

After Thurnwald's Supreme Court victory that found the rules were unfair, a motion to dismiss the adoption was filed.

But an attorney for LDS Family Services, which handled the adoption, says the child shouldn't be removed from his adoptive home. The attorney also wants proof Thurnwald is the father and that he paid a reasonable amount of the expenses of the mother's pregnancy and childbirth.

NO! NO! NO! If the agency cared about the rights and well being of this child, they never would have SOLD him to begin with, considering they knew that Dad had intentions of raising HIS SON!
IF Dad had won this case, how many other children would this agency no longer be able to sell?

Since this case was not resolved through the courts, why wasn't there some sort of temporary visitation arrangement in place?
The only thing that concerned this agency was having to refund money from a botched abduction...money earned by selling a baby!

Father or sperm donor? The front-page story on May 20, "Paternity case," about Nikolas Thurnwald, who wants to gain custody of his three-year-old son, made me want to scream. A quote from Thurnwald, "I don't know his name," tells it all.
How is it in the best interest of his biological child to remove him from the only home he's ever known, from the two people he calls "mommy" and "daddy," and put him in the arms of someone he doesn't know, Mr. Thurnwald?
I would fight to the death to keep my child, whether mine by birth or adoption... (blah blah blah...)

It's heroic for this poster to fight for her child, yet because Nikolas does the same, it is insinuated that he is uncaring, insensitive, scum of the earth??? Which is it, lady? Fight for your child, or give up?

What about the people who knew that this father wanted his son, yet continued on with the purchase? Why haven't I found questions about their integrity? Why aren't they considered selfish? They had a chance to buy a baby, and they took it!
The only interests they were looking out for, was their own! What truth can these people possibly tell this child when he starts asking questions? Or will he live the "We are your parents" lie?
How will he feel, if/when at age 14, he finds out his entire life was a lie? That his Dad does want him, but an agency sold him!
I haven't seen these kinds of questions, anywhere!

After reading the May 28 letter, "Case is all about Thurnwald, not child," I just couldn't take all the negative criticism Nikolas Thurnwald is receiving for trying to get his son back.

People who wrote and trashed him need to pull their heads out and read the May 20 news story again ("Paternity case"). They all think he is just barely trying to get custody of his son after three years, but he's been trying since the day his son was born!

SYRACUSE -- A father's quest to reunite with his son has apparently come to an end -- the Utah Court of Appeals has ruled against the man whose son was placed for adoption against his wishes four years ago.

One judge noted, however, that the law cited to terminate Nikolas Thurnwald's paternity rights is vague, illusory, highly problematic and invites fabrication.

He urged the Legislature to clarify the law.

"... (S)evering an unmarried biological father's parental rights based on such technicalities serves to reinforce traditional notions about gender and childrearing -- i.e., that women are biologically better suited for raising children," Judge James Z. Davis wrote in his concurring opinion released Thursday.

"(Those) notions are antiquated and harmful to both men and women."

I pray that there's a way to reverse this perverse decision. I don't see how he would benefit, being raised in a cloak of secrecy and lies! These people who adopted him knows that his Daddy wants him!
How are people with obviously very little compassion, no concern for others, or no basic sense of right and wrong, in the best interest of this little tyke?
But hey, they can comfort each other with the truth. There was a legal glitch, And no matter the consequences, this baby legally belongs to them, because he was bought and paid for!
